We launched a project earlier this year to explore the feasibility of raising funds to build a wheeled sports facility at the southern end of Cotford St Luke Recreation Ground, on the former petanque area. Initial assessments suggest the site is well suited to a purpose-built facility. The proposed location is well separated from existing sports pitches and residential properties, whilst still being close to the village centre and local amenities.
We asked residents who visited our stall at the fete to fill out a survey and tell us their thoughts on this initiative. The response was overwhelmingly positive and we would like to hear from as many residents as possible about this so that we can demonstrate as much support as possible. Please go to our website for more information and a link to the survey.
Plans are being explored to see whether we could raise enough funds to provide a durable, low-maintenance and quiet facility, with a layout tailored to the site and suitable for riders of different ages and abilities. There are various types of fa
cilities – concrete, wood and metal or a combination.
Importantly, local children and teenagers are already showing real enthusiasm for the project, with strong interest in having a dedicated place to ride, meet friends and be active locally. Community involvement will be an important part of developing the design and creating a facility that reflects what local young people want.
Further surveys will be needed to confirm drainage, ground conditions, utilities and flood risk, while existing trees will be carefully protected. Planning and funding options will also be explored as the project develops.
The project currently has support from the Cotford, Norton and Bishop’s Lydeard Parish Councils, Somerset Council and those in the local community who completed surveys at the fete. The next step is to work with a specialist firm to develop the design, support planning permissions and explore the various funding opportunities.
