This week work has been carried out on the attenuation ponds on the floodplain.
To give some background as to why this work has been carried out please see below.
The Parish Council met with Somerset Councils Flood service manager last year and walked the floodplain and ditch network in the parish. In addition the Parish Council commissioned a flood survey. At the guidance of SC Manager the Parish Council applied for a grant from the Somerset Rivers Authority and were advised one of the essential items of work was to clear the trees from the attenuation ponds, to make sure they worked properly and prevented the village flooding. A grant of £15,000 was awarded to the Parish Council to carry out work on the floodplain and ditches. The trees have been cleared from the pond this week and the bush laid as a natural hedge around the edge to encourage natural habitat and make the area safer and more visible. As additional safety measures the Parish Council will be installing more “Caution deep water” signage and a safety ring. Hopefully this explains the reasons why the work was carried out for the benefit of residents. Please can I also ask that if you see contractors carrying out work and you are concerned that you contact the Parish Council directly, as unfortunately some residents have been abusive to the contractors and this is simply unacceptable.
