BISHOPS LYDEARD FETE AND FLOWER SHOW - 19 TH JULY 2008

This annual event was held in brilliant sunshine and attracted
large crowds to the Village Hall and Green. There were a record number of
stalls and attractions at the Fete including lamb racing, skittles, bouncy
castle and slide, barbeque, Debbie Aspey's dancers, tug of war, and teas
and cakes from the BL & Cotford
WI. Our thanks go to all the stallholders and those who helped in all sorts
of different ways to make the day such a success. The raffle in aid of the
Village Hall Development Fund raised £200 and we wish to thank all
the local businesses and individuals who generously donated prizes.
Nearly
400 entries of an exceptionally high standard were received for the Flower
Show and it was pleasing to note that nearly 50% of the entrants were children
from the local area. Vegetables and a scarecrow produced by pupils at Bishops
Lydeard Primary School were shown for the first time although there were
no entries in the new homemade wine class, much to the disappointment of
Roger Sleap, the designated judge! Chris Lovell defied the weather by winning
the President's Challenge cup to add to the Hoyle Cup which he won for the
second year running. He was also awarded an Award of Merit for his potato
entry. Rachel Norman won 2 trophies, carrying on the family tradition from
previous generations of the Norman family, and won an Award of Merit for
her display of cut flowers. The third award of merit was given to June Harper
for her stunning floral art display based on the theme of the Beijing Olympics.
The prizes were presented by Gwen Saunders, a long-standing resident of the
village, who has been associated with the Flower Show for many years.
The
Committee would like to thank the judges, stewards, The Corner Stores, The
Paper Shop and the people who entered the Show for the benefit and enjoyment
of the whole community. Comments or ideas and offers of help for 2009 can be
directed at the Greg Allen (Fete-430421) or Jane Durrant (Flower Show-433031).
